Anchoring Labels to Line Start and End

Today Beth asked me if a line label like this was possible: Since I know I have seen this in the default template (like the crow's feet label) I said sure!  It can be done. But when I sat down to do it, the anchor points that I was looking for weren't an option.  For some reason I was expecting to have start and end as anchor choices.
