2 Bits, 4 Bits, 64 Bits A Dollar

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 21st March 2007

With the release of Vista in all it’s incarnations, most manufacturer have started placing some version of the new Microsoft OS on machines by default. Many sites have reviews of Vista, so I’m not here to bore you with another one. So why are we talking about it? Because you don’t want it. Find out why after the jump.

Even Google Has Its Limits

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 20th March 2007

After I read Scott McEachron’s post on the new functionality today and where they had derived surface information from, I caught him on IM to chat. We’re both big fans of the idea behind the Google Earth interface, but there are some gotchas, and not enough people know about them. Do you? Find out after the jump.

Sharing Tool Palettes on a Network

Posted by Mark Scacco, P.E. on 16th March 2007

Did you ever want to share a tool palette with other users? And have it dynamically update when you make changes? You are probably aware of the export/import functions of tool palettes. Those, however will just deliver a boring static palette to the other users. That might be fine for AutoCAD users, but this is Civil 3D! We need things to be dynamic! Read on for a step-by-step procedure.

Civil 3D 2008 Users Guide and Help

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 16th March 2007

Of all of the new features in Civil3D 2008 that I have been working with, I have a favorite.

I have been infinitely impressed with Help and the Users Guide for Civil 3D 2008.  I can’t say enough about how much it has been enhanced and improved in the past year.

Dynamic Pipe Network Tables in Civil 3D 2008

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 13th March 2007

Yes, I am still alive.  I have spend the past month buried in work.  I’ve been so fried and focused during the day that Friday, two weeks ago, I was looking for something to read on my bookshelves that had absolutely nothing to do with computers.  I have a pretty vast children’s library that I am building up for my daughter, and I saw the Harry Potter series on the shelf.  I hadn’t read it yet because I figured I would wind up reading it outloud to kids someday.  But as I sat on the couch scanning the shelves, Harry seemed to be the perfect escape.  So, over the past 12 days, as soon as I could turn my brain off from Civil 3D at the end of the day, I have read all six Harry Potters.  So I’ve dried my tears and I guess I have to blog for relaxation until July.

ANYWAY.

Ed Note: John Postlewait of discussion group and AU notoriety works for George Butler Associates in KC. He wrote this up for me and I’ve been sitting on it for too long. These are his opinions, and have not been edited except for consistency of inconsitency. John’s Top 10…after the jump!

Simple Sampling Sends Scribbler Soaring

Posted by Jason Hickey on 9th March 2007

Anyone know how hard it is to find a synonym for the word “author” that begins with “S?” The above title may allude to that fact…

Anyway, now that I’m done with the literary shenanigans for today, I’m going to tell you more about enhanced section functionality in Civil 3D 2008. It’s simple and easy to do - I’m going to add newly created data to an existing section view.

A Little More About Dog and Pony

Posted by Jason Hickey on 9th March 2007

This one is REALLY going to be short and sweet….

A week or so ago, James posted about new functionality with Civil 3D 2008 and Google Earth, mainly that you can pull in both an image and a surface now from Google Earth. We’ll hold off on any comments about the true worth of that surface that we’re bringing in and focus on something else for now.

Click more to find out - images are required to illustrate this, but it’s cool, I promise.

Stylin’ and Profilin’

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 8th March 2007

Two years ago I taught a House of Style class at AU that spent almost the entire time discussing profiles and profile views. Up through 2007, getting these styles right was a pretty big headache. The sheer number of options, in conjunction with some pretty obtuse dialogs made for a lot of trial and error work in getting it just right. With 2008, the team in Manchester has drastically changed the interface for this monster, so let’s look at the improvements after the jump.

Volume Labels on a Section View?

Posted by Jason Hickey on 7th March 2007

I’ve had people request a way to put volume labels on a section view before, but I had no really good way to do it. I thought that I had heard some rumblings in Manchester about being able to do that in Civil 3D 2008, but quickly glanced at it and forgot about it when I couldn’t find an easy way to do it. This morning on my drive in, sections were really on my mind for some reason, and I remembered wanting to be able to add the volume labels. So, I asked my good pal Nick Zeeben if it was there - he told me that it was, and where to find it. He even let me in on the secret, which I’ll let you people know in a few minutes. So, if you think you’d like to see a section view that has the information shown in the image below, click more to see how it’s done.
