There is a sizeable bug in the style interface within Civil 3D 2010. I say sizeable because I have crashed 12 times within 2 hours trying to debug the problem.
There is also a phenomenon that occurs with Civil Design people and Fridays. Design software is the last thing on their minds, and they refuse to leave the golf course or pub to try something for you. Go figure..
Get the skinny after the jump.
Here is the issue
You cannot edit, nor create any Point Label Style that already contains, or will contain, a block of any kind. The application refuses. Well, actually the application boots your A*$ right out.
We go into a stripped template, and add a block to a generic Point Label Style, right?
Now select the block and……Hit Ok….and
Success!! It’s fine!!!! Just kidding, that was 2009. HAA HAAA HAAA
No, in 2010 you get the Autodesk welcome screen. Editing or Creating a the Point Label Style with a block. I even got a crash from just whispering about it behind the computer’s back.
Friends
I have a lot of things cooking on my computer, ton’s of research and Autodesk apps. Vista hates me in the afternoons, and I just couldn’t tell where the problem was rooted.
I called everyone that had ever mentioned 2010. One was on vacation. One was tied up with things. One did all she could at the moment. Most of my associates were willing to try, but the bartender refused to let them play with his/her computer. The rest were not willing to leave the golf course to play Autodesk with John.
So I did what any red blooded American would do, and no, I didn’t throw it through the window. I logged a support call. My VAR tech (VAR and tech will remain nameless for professional consideration here) was driving in a Hail storm. Literally. He was still trying to get the info, and reassure me that his blackberry would get the log out to all associates, and the team would have an answer even if the hail caused an accident. I like dedication.
I thanked them and called my friends at EE. “James, Please just tell me if it’s a bug or not, I don’t want to reinstall!!! I gotta know!”. James was very patient, reminding me to calm down, and had the bug recreated twice in 3 minutes. Relief !!!!! Sweet relief…
Sure it is still a bug, and I have no work around for it. I’ll just figure something else out. I’ll go conventional. But at least I know it’s not my shell that’s bad.
The Moral to the Story
Civil 3D 2010 has another bug, and
It pays to know who your friends are…
Thanks James Wedding, EE staff, Nameless VAR Tech, and She who did what she could. Thank you very much.

How about creating the label style in 2009 and bringing it forward to 2010 as a work around?
I tried that and it still crashed. I created a soil boring label in 2009 and brought it into 2010 and it will still crash the program.
I used 2009 and brought a utility pole (block) label with no problem into 2010.

Chris, Good Idea! Hey, aren’t you supposed to be on vacation?
I think that would work find, since all my 2009 styles SEEM to have populated 2010 drawings well. In fact the reason this is just coming to light is because all the 2009 stuff was working fine.
My problem was needing to verify a display style. I am going back to 2009 to complete this job.
Larry,
DId you try editing it? If you leave it alone, does it work ok?
I thought that I had seen a posting somewhere from another user who had seen this problem with a solution, but I can’t remember the details. I’ve been searching the discussion group but I can’t find anything. Does anyone else recall or am I losing it?
