Monday Rundown: Subscribers, Jobs, Videos, AU, Golf

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 23rd June 2008

Happy Mondays to all! We’re always making changes here at EE, this week’s nothing new. Here’s the rundown.

  • Five Questions for Dan and Dave is almost closed. Get over there and ask them what you always wanted to know. Remember, they can’t disclose future features, but they can answer lots of other things. Be creative!
  • CivilAccess customers should make sure your civil3d.com login reflects your corporate e-mail address. We will turn on access based on your company domain, so be sure to get all your goodies by updating your contact information here.
  • Opportunities page listings are free (as in beer,) for a limited time with only a placement fee if your firm hires someone. Nothing risked, nothing gained, so if you’re one of the few folks looking for help right now, visit the Opportunities page and get started.
  • Video archives are hopefully going online this week for CA customers. These include all the recorded EECasts to date, classes, quick lessons, all the stuff you need to keep moving and learning in C3D. If you want access to the best Civil 3D information and classes on-demand, shouldn’t you be a CivilAccess customer?
  • EE@AU is 100%. Every single member of the technical team will be teaching at AU this year. To celebrate, we’ll be giving away a free pass to the conference to a lucky civil3d.com subscriber. Keep your eyes open.
  • Speaking of AU, I’ve already started pondering golf courses in Vegas for the Duffer’s Open. If you’re going to AU, don’t miss the best unofficial AU golf tournament going. More details on that to come soon.

I think that’s enough for a Monday, don’t you? As always, thanks for coming by.

Go Watch this Class. NOW.

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 11th December 2007

I was in Las Vegas for AU for about 48 hours this year, so I missed out on a lot of great classes. I am catching up at http://au.autodesk.com. If you login with the password you used to register for AU, you’ll get access to the class papers and screencasts.

I just finished watching CV-300-4P Caffeinated Grading with David Garrigues. YOU MUST WATCH THIS CLASS. If you didn’t go to AU or you aren’t on subscription, make friends with someone with access and watch it on their machine over lunch.

Find more about why after the jump.

AU 2007 Golf Photos

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 6th December 2007

Alistair Clark of White Young Green in the UK was kind enough to share his photos of our golf outing with the rest of the gang, and I’m sharing them with you. Click here to check out the web album. I know the rest of the gang took some pictures, I’ll add them as I get them.

From Dirt To Doors - AU Handout Available

Posted by Jason Hickey on 5th December 2007

As promised, I’ve uploaded my AU handout here to the site.   You can download it after the jump.

For anyone who actually sat in on the class (we didn’t get to see all 250 that were registered since it was on Friday morning…) let me know what you thought.   Was the information useful?  Did you get anything out of it?   Was I really as green as I felt?

Dana’s AU Papers: Large Surfaces and Civil 3D to Help with Hydrology

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 30th November 2007

I’m posting my papers here because there were some problems with the hard copies in class yesterday. I will also post them on AU Online (http://au.autodesk.com) as soon as I figure out how.

Get Your Head out of the Point Cloud:
Using AutoCAD® Civil 3D® for Large Surface Datasets
Dana Breig Probert, Engineered Efficiency
CV310-4 These days, we seem to be buried in data — but how much data is too much? It’s often difficult enough to open our data files, let alone build a meaningful TIN surface from them. We know we need to use high-tech field-collection information, such as LIDAR, Aerial Topography, and GPS points, so let’s figure out a way to use it with the software and computer systems we currently have in our office.

Using AutoCAD® Civil 3D® for Stormwater Management Tasks: Part I, Hydrology
Dana Breig Probert, Engineered Efficiency
CV314-2 This class will show you how to harness the power of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008 to assist in designing and performing a TR-55/TR-20 or Rational Method Stormwater Management Analysis, including techniques for annotating plans, creating tables and preparing for modeling in your favorite hydrology software package.
Click more to get the papers (you must take a moment to register if you are new to our site).

Revit and Civil 3D - Do they REALLY work together?

Posted by Jason Hickey on 30th November 2007

Finally, since my class was over this morning, I can give the official answer - kinda, but not that great.    Brilliant, huh?

Thanks to all that attended my class this morning - I had a lot of fun, and would like to thank my former coworker, Mike Massey for his assistance with it.    I’ll be posting the handout later this week for anyone interested in how to make the two programs work together.

Here’s a question for any of you who are currently trying to use both Civil 3D and Revit - I know that using shared coordinates should make Revit export drawing files out to the correct coordinate system, but we’ve had issues with that.    If anyone has made it work correctly, please email me and let me know how you’ve done it.    My address is my first name dot my last name at this domain - Thanks!

Twenty and Six

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 30th November 2007

So, in today’s “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Vault” class, I mentioned that the City of Dallas has (had?) a requirement for sewer profiles at 20 and six. I offered a copy of Mastering Civil 3D 2008 for those that could discern why. I promised I’d tell after the exhibit hall closed, so here you go. Login and read on for the answer.

Large Surfaces AU Class Paper will be posted soon!

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 29th November 2007

My apologies to the folks in my “Get Your Head Out of the Point Cloud” class today- the copy center left out a few pages in the handout and I didn’t catch it! As soon as I get on a machine where I can make a pdf, I will be uploading it here. I also will make sure it gets on AU Online (http://au.autodesk.com). If you missed the class, no worries- it was recorded and should be up at AU Online soon.

I believe that all downloads from civil3d.com require a site login–so if you haven’t signed up for all of our great content- please take the time to do so–you’ll be ready to download the paper.

From the Floor

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 28th November 2007

We’re on the second night of official Exhibition Hall madness. Tonight Dr. Robert Pack came by and brought his copy of Mastering for the team to sign. He’s teaching C3D as part of the curriculum at Utah State University. I’m excited to see more and more educational training happen. We’re going to need more users coming into the industry ready to roll!
