Labeling Coordinates with Elevations

Posted by Jason Hickey on 18th July 2008

I frequently receive requests to label coordinates in Civil 3D. This can be done, but only with a point label or with an alignment label. To add in the surface elevation requires reference text. Follow the link to see the style that I created to do this as well as an image of the style.

Civil 3D Fundamentals: Command Settings

Posted by Jason Hickey on 11th July 2008

Every day, I like to check in with the Autodesk discussion groups to see what people are having to say, what issues they’re running into, or what they love about Civil 3D. As I look lately, it seems as if there are a lot of people just now adopting Civil 3D, so I want to write a post that will help them as they grow in their Civil 3D knowledge.

Do you ever wish that you had a way to set default styles in the program? Do you wish that when you performed a task, that it would pick up on that nifty style that you created automatically instead of you having to pick it? Well, that can be done with command settings - find out how after the jump.

Spot Slope Label in Profile

Posted by M. Anderson, PE on 9th July 2008

We are working on a roadway extension project for a site that only has a stub street.   We have the EG ground sampled and the profile view has been created.  My proposed grade needs to start from the end of the street’s concrete apron and needs to match the existing slope or I need a transition area.

But I want to label only that first existing tangent. How do I label this one short little segment.

This question stumped me for a minute.

Using Trimble Link Without a Data Collector

Posted by Jason Hickey on 27th June 2008

Yesterday I was browsing around the Autodesk Civil 3D discussion group for a few minutes. I go there from time to time to research quick questions or to see if anyone needs help. I was talking to a user who was having trouble with Trimble Link and Civil 3D - well, part of the problem was with Trimble Link and Civil 3D…he couldn’t import a .JOB file using Trimble Link because he didn’t have the data collector available. I ran into this same problem when I first installed Trimble Link a few years ago, because I don’t have any physical data collectors that I can hook to my computer. I have emulators for TDS Survey Pro, Microsurvey FieldGenius 2008, Leica GPS/TPS 1200, Trimble TCS and SCS900, Topcon TopSurv PC and Carlson SurvCE, and have successfully transferred data from them into Civil 3D, but it took a bit of work. So if you find that you don’t have access to the data collector BUT you have the .JOB files stored on either a local machine or a network, then this is the article for you.  Follow the link to find out more.

A $0.10 Tip about Point Styles

Posted by Jason Hickey on 20th June 2008

As I was thinking about a subject to write about today, I was engaged in a discussion an Autodesker (who shall remain nameless) and he pointed out something that he wasn’t aware of in Civil 3D, and I can understand why - it’s kind of a hidden setting. So if someone very familiar with the program was unaware of it, he figured (as did I) that some of you might not be familiar with it either. It’s all about point styles.

Ever drag a point label away from a point marker and got really irritated because the arrow head didn’t EXACTLY touch the point? Follow the link to find out how to fix this pesky problem.

We Don’t Need No Stinking Patches

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 9th June 2008

Well, yeah, ok maybe we do. Especially if we’re running Vault. Somehow, the boys and girls in Manchester managed to get the patch for 2008 to play with ADMS (Vault) 2009 uploaded and it slipped by us. Read on for more info and the link.

Dynamic Surface Cut-Fill Ticks! FINALLY.

Posted by M. Anderson, PE on 4th June 2008

Kudos to James Wedding for his All Signs Positive post, and Christopher Fugitts’ Discussion Group comments yesterday, I think I figured out how to get my volume surface labels to have the colored tick marks.

EECast Today (6.4.08): Building Better Terrain Models

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 3rd June 2008

Tomorrow, I will be doing an EECast on Building Better Terrain models.

I put this class together a few years ago to help new designers figure out how surfaces work, and I found that the room was often crowded with not only the new staff, but everyone! If you have ever wondered what REALLY happens with triangulation, or what difference do breaklines REALLY make, be sure to tune in. Note that I will be using Civil 3D 2009 to build the models, but the surface building theory will apply no matter what software you use.

Also note that Mark Scacco will be leading off the webcast with some additional news about Land Desktop being discontinued, the new product mix, and how EE can help.

Learn how to sign up and see the agenda after the jump.

All Signs Are Positive

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 24th May 2008

The Magic Eight-ball sometimes delivers on your wishes. It’s not often that we give up free styles, but since this is one of my favorite hacks, and will probably be part of my AU class, here’s one for Sue. The point label style in the attached dwg file will label positive’s but not negatives with a sign. Follow the jump to see how.

Tying Corridors and Feature Lines Together Dynamically

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 22nd May 2008

Time flies when you are having fun and the EECast yesterday was incredibly fun. I was very excited to show dynamic feature line extraction from corridors and some ideas on how you might tie shared-site feature lines together.

I could see lightbulbs going on all over the place as the live questions and comments kept coming in… Since we only had 60 minutes together, I thought I would put up a few summary diagrams of the intersection. (I’ll do the lot grading one later.) Keep in mind that while Civil 3D 2008 has the same ability to have one feature line “drive” another on the same site, the dynamic corridor extraction are 2009 only.

Also note that next week, James will be doing an EECast on a different dynamic intersection modeling idea that uses the EEPropack and dynamically linked profiles, and on June 4, I will be doing an EECast on Building Better Terrain Models.

See the diagram after the jump.
