Critiquing the Criteria

Posted by Joshua Modglin on 12th June 2008

It is nice to come from behind the coding page and peek at some of the new features of C3D 2009. One of the new features that caught my eye was being able to set design criteria. What is it and how can it help you?

New for Civil 3D 2009: Free Curve By Best Fit

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 23rd May 2008

Have you ever wrestled with alignment curves in Civil 3D? You want a flexible, free curve that is constrained by radius, but you’d like it to come close to a certain location, or maybe even follow a few Civil 3D points.

Civil 3D 2009 adds some new alignment curve tools to help. Find out more after the jump.

Alignment Playground

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 4th January 2008

A few questions have come up this week in the NG regarding alignment components, and I received an e-mail asking about a drawing mentioned in the Mastering Civil 3D book, so I thought I’d save some searching and make it available here. Thanks to Karen Dowling in Manchester for sharing this drawing with me and letting me share it with you.

Download the Alignment playground drawing after the jump.

Civil 3D Fundamentals - Calculating Quantities from a Corridor

Posted by Jason Hickey on 3rd January 2008

Lately, I’ve been seeing quite a few questions on the Civil 3D discussion group regarding volumes and quantities. Volumes can be pretty straightforward, but individual material quantities can be a bit more in-depth. Following the link will hopefully illustrate this process a bit better.

Fundamentals: Converting Polylines to Alignments

Posted by James Wedding, P.E. on 22nd October 2007

When people first start using C3D, they’re tempted to draw polylines, then convert them to alignments. Many long time users suggest this is a bad idea because you lose some of the intelligence of the alignment layout tools (i.e. Extension lines, floating curves, etc.) Read the rest of this entry »

Profile (or Alignment) Toolbar Acting Funny?

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 2nd August 2007

While I do like the new modeless toolbars for both alignments and profiles in Civil 3D 2008, I do find three potential problems that users can sometimes encounter.

Read on to learn about why your buttons may go “gray” or other glitches.

Alignments and Sites Revisited

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 31st July 2007

My buddy Todd over at LRHA pinged me today asking about restarting tag numbers for siteless alignments… and it got me thinking about something…

Civil 3D 2008 introduced the idea of a siteless alignment. For those out there who have struggled with the idea of site geometry, this is a nice improvement. Alignments built on the <none> site will not interact with feature lines or parcels or other alignments.

Alignments can still be placed on sites, however, and here are a few reasons why you might consider putting a few alignments on regular sites along with your parcels.

Make sure you WANT your commands to change

Posted by Dana Breig Probert, EIT on 1st May 2007

Here I am in Happy Dana world just working away on some alignments in Civil 3D 2008.  I create an alignment and I give it a name of “Defford Road”.  Then I make another alignment and notice that by default, its name is “Defford Road”, too.  Then another “Defford” then another…. what is happening?  Why oh why?

Operating Siteless

Posted by Jeff Mishler on 14th April 2007

Jeff is a guest, let me know what you think!-JW

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Jeff Mishler, I live and work in the wine country of northern California. I’ve used Autocad since 1986 and have been customizing Autocad pretty much since Lisp was introduced to us. I am relatively new to the Civil3D scene, however. I still am unable to use it full time in my work, as we (all 3 of us in my firm) have too many consultants that live in the Dark Ages (R14-R2002) that we must support. Therefore my knowledge of it is no where near that of the other contributors here. Now that you know a bit about me, let’s get to this new siteless thing…after the jump. Simple Sampling Sends Scribbler Soaring

Posted by Jason Hickey on 9th March 2007

Anyone know how hard it is to find a synonym for the word “author” that begins with “S?” The above title may allude to that fact…

Anyway, now that I’m done with the literary shenanigans for today, I’m going to tell you more about enhanced section functionality in Civil 3D 2008. It’s simple and easy to do - I’m going to add newly created data to an existing section view.

Click more to find out how…
