One of the classes that I’ve been teaching for our unlimited instructor-led training sessions is called Residential Design. When we wrote the class, out goal was to take a real-world project and apply core skills to all aspects of subdivision design- such as conceptual analysis, grading, road design and more.
In the Residential Design class, there is a very detailed chapter on creating subdivision lots. Those of you who know me, know that parceling is one of my favorite topics. In the winter of 2005, I did my first batch of site plans with Civil 3D 2006 (HF2, remember those days?) Over the course of the next year, I worked on twenty or so projects. Some of them were at the preliminary site plan stage and went through many iterations. Some of them were final plats that required detailed labeling and careful checking. I tried to incorporate all of those lessons learned into this class, and of course, Chapter 6 of Mastering Civil 3D.
One thing that always made me scratch my head was a really good method for setting parcels along curves, when their frontage was measured at the setback line, not the right-of-way. I have a few techniques, but here is one way you might try that we talk about in detail in the class.

This is one of my favorite parts of the 2009 release. 2009 allows labeling of objects that are in external reference drawings. The ability to label both parcel segments and parcel area labels is sweet. It takes a little getting use too…

Overall, I’m a fan of 2009. A really big fan. It’s ugly, but I think James already discussed that at length. But there are two features of the new release that I hold very near and dear to my heart - want to find out more? Follow the link…

Today’s review has been a long time coming - I haven’t been putting it off for any particular reason, I just haven’t gotten around to it until now. But here it is, my review of Q-Legal from Bud Miller of BudCAD. My most sincere apologies to Bud, since this has been in my inbox since April 25 of this year. But I promised I’d get to it, and here it is - follow the link to see what this software can do for you.

My sanity is suffering today. Instead of taking a decaf tea break, I feel I must write to urge you to DRILL CONTROL+CLICK. Do exercises. Have a mantra. Whatever. Just get used to it.
I know James blogged about this last week, but I don’t think you can appreciate how hard this habit is to establish until you are messing with your first site plan in 2008.

Happy Monday from Dallas Love Field. The post yesterday was no joke, and we’ve got some great tips and articles already queued up for this month.
As I was writing up some things this week for the Ottawa Cad Camp (yes, that’s me, Jim Wedding. Has anyone ever seen me call myself Jim in writing or in person? Why is James so hard?) I came across yet one more little nice addition to C3D 2008. Check it out after the jump.

If you haven’t been able to resist the urge to explode Civil 3D objects, or you copied and exploded a surface to extract some contour information, you may not realize that there are monsters lurking in your drawing.

One of the things that became clear during the Spanning Label posts I wrote a few weeks ago was that you needed to weed out any unnecessary natural vertices in your linework before turning them into parcels.
Sure, you can use Map Cleanup to help with this, but I rediscovered a nifty Express Tool called “Overkill” that fixes vertex problems in a snap.

A while back, I wrote an article about a program developed to assist surveyors with writing legal descriptions. LegalWorks is a program written by Terry Dotson of DotSoft. It’s a great program, easy to use, and pays for itself with the first legal description that you create with it. Well, I received an email recently from Terry letting me know that the program had been updated. It sat in my inbox for a while until I finally got around to updating the program. Now, I’ve been showing this to clients this week, and they’re simply amazed at what the program can do (look for a purchase soon, Terry….) However, I wish I’d had the update earlier this week (I know, I know, I had it, just being a procrastinator.) Here’s why the new version is so cool - click more to find out…
