Thanks to all who attended today’s EECast on automated linework. I promised some more information, and I wanted a place to record some of the things that I learned. A very special thanks to Michael Bachinski, James Hektner, and Jason (whose last name escapes me at the moment) of MicroSurvey for all their help this morning and during the EECast. These guys are definitely in the survey business, because we started the conversations this morning before 7 AM

I spent the weekend getting up to speed on some survey tools by working through Jason’s C3D for Surveyors class which is open to our CivilAccess clients. My background is more design oriented, so I was glad to see some practical examples ranging from simple field books, to more complex adjustments, all presented in a practical project environment.
A few of the exercises used a trial version of Microsurvey’s Field Genius to do some simulations and processing. It seemed like a very useful tool, so I was excited to see Jason’s EECast for tomorrow.
EECasts are open to all end users. Join us!

Do you have problems understanding the line codes that are compatible with Civil 3D? Would you like a way to correct field crew mistakes in the office? Do you have issues determining the best way to convert your data into a FBK?
Then Wednesday’s EECast is for you.
Join Jason Hickey as he shows you innovative methods of data collection and conversion.

Happy Mondays to all! We’re always making changes here at EE, this week’s nothing new. Here’s the rundown.
- Five Questions for Dan and Dave is almost closed. Get over there and ask them what you always wanted to know. Remember, they can’t disclose future features, but they can answer lots of other things. Be creative!
- CivilAccess customers should make sure your civil3d.com login reflects your corporate e-mail address. We will turn on access based on your company domain, so be sure to get all your goodies by updating your contact information here.
- Opportunities page listings are free (as in beer,) for a limited time with only a placement fee if your firm hires someone. Nothing risked, nothing gained, so if you’re one of the few folks looking for help right now, visit the Opportunities page and get started.
- Video archives are hopefully going online this week for CA customers. These include all the recorded EECasts to date, classes, quick lessons, all the stuff you need to keep moving and learning in C3D. If you want access to the best Civil 3D information and classes on-demand, shouldn’t you be a CivilAccess customer?
- EE@AU is 100%. Every single member of the technical team will be teaching at AU this year. To celebrate, we’ll be giving away a free pass to the conference to a lucky civil3d.com subscriber. Keep your eyes open.
- Speaking of AU, I’ve already started pondering golf courses in Vegas for the Duffer’s Open. If you’re going to AU, don’t miss the best unofficial AU golf tournament going. More details on that to come soon.
I think that’s enough for a Monday, don’t you? As always, thanks for coming by.

Since Jason is teaching Core Concepts this week in the mornings, and the EECast is scheduled to start at 11 AM our time (Central), there would seem to be a bit of conflict with him discussing point clouds during the EECast this week. Never fear dear readers, we have a plan! In a bold move (ok, in just a scheduling move,) I’m covering What’s New with Data Shortcuts in 2009.
In a quick hour, we’ll review the changes to using Data Shortcuts in C3D 2009. We’ll look at the Project Template, the Working Folder, the Shortcuts folder and the mechanics of using Data Shortcuts as part of your actual project. Additionally, we’ll look at the new Data Shortcuts Editor to repath your in-place shortcuts to new information as it’s available. Take a shortcut to 2009 with this nuts and bolts EECast.
See you then!

I am constantly looking for more resources to fill in the gaps of what I know about terrain modeling. They didn’t really teach it in school (or maybe I wasn’t there that day), and I have never been able to find much that was universally helpful. My EECast today was based on tidbits gained from many sources.
See the complete list of links, books and tutorials after the jump.

Tomorrow, I will be doing an EECast on Building Better Terrain models.
I put this class together a few years ago to help new designers figure out how surfaces work, and I found that the room was often crowded with not only the new staff, but everyone! If you have ever wondered what REALLY happens with triangulation, or what difference do breaklines REALLY make, be sure to tune in. Note that I will be using Civil 3D 2009 to build the models, but the surface building theory will apply no matter what software you use.
Also note that Mark Scacco will be leading off the webcast with some additional news about Land Desktop being discontinued, the new product mix, and how EE can help.
Learn how to sign up and see the agenda after the jump.
