Hydraulic Profile Label for Storm Profiles

Please welcome Tony Carcamo to the civil3d.com team–JW

Hi everyone. I would like to say this is my first official post with Civil3d.com. Tonight, I would like to provide you a few tips and tricks for pipe network design. Lets begin by setting the Manning’s coefficient for each of your pipe sizes in the part network list. I provided a list of the three most commonly used storm pipe types below. You can also find this information in most city standard drainage manual. This will come in handy later on in the post. (more…)

Order of Priority for Point Display

Thanks to Richard Sincovec for this concise listing of priority. I forget the order quite a bit, so I’m putting it here for safe mental housekeeping.

If you use Description Keys to assign styles to each individual Cogo Point, then those styles will take priority over the styles in the Point Group, unless you turn on the Point Group Override (on the Overrides tab, in the Point Group Properties).

The order of control is:

1)  Style from Point Group, IF the Override is enabled.
2)  Style assigned to the Cogo Point itself, if one is assigned.
3)  Style from Point Group.

You can check out Sinc’s company here and his software here. His toolset seems to strike more of a chord with Survey folks, while EE’s stuff rings with engineers, but it’s always good to check out new stuff.

Want a Box? Better Tell Autodesk!

Steve Johnson has some nice commentary over on his “AutoCAD does a Cheshire Cat,” post, but here’s the short form:

All 2011 Subscription Customers will default to download delivery. If you want a physical box of discs, you have to tell Autodesk via your Subscription settings this year.

Hit the Subscription Center today and make sure you’re setup how you want to be. I only have to download a few versions, and I have a fast connection, but I can imagine for some folks, downloading 20GB of data (products, servers, etc.) could be a major hassle. Besides, it’s always a good idea to review your product count this time to year to make sure all your paperwork is in order.

Spot Elev Rounded to 0.05-feet

A question came up today from our Pittsburg branch:

“How can I make Civil 3D round spot elevations to the nearest five-hundredths of a foot (0.05’)?”

I knew creating an EXPRESSION was the answer but I just didn’t know how to accomplish this task.  So after putting my noodle on the solution over the afternoon – from time-to-time when I needed a break from real work – I came up with the final expression around dinner.

Profile Transparency Commands

Do any of the following questions sound familiar?

1. I have a location in PLAN view and I want to know where that is on my PROFILE?

2. I want to come off a PVI at a certain percentage, go to the next PVI and come off it in the opposite direction at a different grade, and where the two cross set a new PVI or adjust an existing PVI?

3. I want to set my PVI at an exact station and elevation but can’t snap to, or offset, any of the profile grid lines in Civil 3D; why is this soo hard?

After the jump learn how the Civil 3D profile Transparency Commands can help you accomplish these common tasks.
