Resources

This is the stuff we use, some stuff we like, some stuff we think you should check out. If you want to add your link, drop me a line, you know the e-mail.

Books

Beyond the Help files (which you really should be reading,) we’d recommend these texts:

  • Mastering Autodesk Civil 3D 2008, written by the home team here at civil3d.com to be the first book you reach for when it’s time to learn something new.
  • Autodesk Courseware: Intersections, Residential Grading, and Plan Production. These books are a collaborative effort between EE and Autodesk. The next best thing to having us in your office when it’s time to dig into one of the featured subjects.

Blogs
Blogs are the daily news of the Civil 3D world. Always changing with what’s hot in the discussion groups or on the auhor’s mind, we find these among the best. I subscribe to over 50 blogs, but these seem to be the ones that are keeping up with the job. This is just my opinion, and there are others out there, so don’t limit yourself to just this list!

  • Between the Lines is Shaan Hurley’s constant feed of tips, links, and insight into the Autodesk world.
  • AutoCAD Insider is Heidi Hewitt’s blog of AutoCAD tips. A popular Cad Camp and AU speaker, she does a great job of reminding us of all the great functions that we sometimes forget exist in the core product.
  • Daily Autocad has a tip of the day, every day. Sometimes their simple, sometimes their genius, but it is worth checking out.
  • Civil 3D - Paving the Way by Scott McEachron. A long time AU speaker, Scott has great insight and offers tips on making C3D more effective in your office.
  • Civil 3D Reminders from Chris Fugitt. He posts up a lot of random styles, code snippets and helpful information for making production work go faster.
  • From the Ground Up offers up the European Autodesk view of the world. Posting some of the best step by step tutorials, it is not a blog to be missed.
  • Avid User of Civil 3D is written by Wendy Lim from Malaysia. She doesn’t post as often as some others, but her posts are generally eye openers, offering new ways to look at some very common problems.

Websites
These sites offer up great utilities, support and other Civil 3D tools that we find incredibly useful.

  • 3AM Solutions is the producer of Dynamite VSP, an incredible high-end rendering solution for civil engineering design. Works directly with C3D objects in the Max/Viz side of the house.
  • Autodesk Civil Community is a clearinghouse for all things Civil Engineering related. Linking to blogs, discussion groups, specifications, professional societies, the works. Go join. Do it now.
  • Autodesk University Online lets you pick through the courses offered at Autodesk University. AU is the best bang for the buck training you can get! If you can’t make it out there, at least you can read up on the great materials presented.
  • Autodesk Graphics Card list lets you check out your card for being fully supported in various modes of graphic display within AutoCAD programs.
  • Civil 3D Discussion Groups is the best free support resource out there. Users, consultants, resellers, and developers all contribute to make this the first place many users look for answers to their tough questions. You will see your authors there quite a bit!
  • Civil 3D Product Page is the official page for the product. Featuring links to webcasts, demos and updates, you have to check in once in a while at least.
  • Engineered Efficiency Inc. is the consulting firm that created the book you have in your hands. Contact us for your consulting or software needs and get training and support for professionals by professionals.
  • GIS Data Depot Link for the SDTS to DEM Data Converter.
  • Ten Links Civil 3D List is a constantly moving list of Civil 3D links and articles that you can subscribe to. If you can’t read it all, read the daily top ten to keep yourself better educated.
